Iceland Field School Day 7 | June 7, 2018

Gudrun Bjarnadóttir explains some refinements of natural dyeing in her wonderful studio/potion room.

Iceland Field School Day 7: Field trip to the extraordinary natural dye studio of Gudrun Bjarnadottir at Hespa near Borgarnes. We learned so much about the plants and lichens that have been used throughout Iceland’s history of textiles and came home with samples we’d dyed ourselves as well as others purchased from her remarkable inventory! We also feasted on delicious tuna salad on homemade malt bread and peanut butter chocolate cake to sustain us!

Thank you, Gudrun, for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and skills and beautiful work site, too (not to forget your dog, Tryggur!!)

Tryggur had no interest in the camera or our group shot, just lots of affection! Seen here, participants of the natural dye workshop with Gudrun Bjarnadóttir, at left, in the apron. Photo: Kathleen Vaughan
